Recipe: sayediyeh (rice with fish صيادية السمك)

Summary: Sayediyeh some times spelled Sayedieh, (Arabic صيادية) is has very rich flavor. Using the combination of black pepper, cumin and saffron brings flavors that are so scrumptious and lip smacking delicious, This Sayediye recipe has such an authentic taste, eating would fly me over all the way to the Mediterranean Sea. This recipe brings back childhood memory, I remember watching my father bringing the fresh fish, he used to buy fish directly from fishermen at the shores of Tripoli and watching my mother clean and gut the fish, and now, thanks to the retail supermarket we buy the fish ready, clean and fillet, Soooooo glad life has changed and I live in this era. Using fish fillets makes this recipe easy and quick.

  • 4 white fish fillets
  • 1 cup flour seasoned with salt and pepper
  • ½ cup oil to fry the fish
  • ½ cup oil to cook the rice
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 2 cups rice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon saffron
  • 2 ¾ cups water

  1. Cut the fillets in large pieces. Dip in flour, and fry in oil till browned. Saute the onions for 5 to 10 minutes. Add the rice, salt pepper, cumin and mix. Set aside. Layer the fish, then the rice mixture. Boil the water and the saffron and add over the rice without mixing. Cook over low heat until the rice is tender.
